A love that, with morning, will be no more.
Crispy fallen leaves ignite
Sending flames into the night
Warm smoke rises with the breeze
Shadows cast from tall oak trees
Dread from morning coming soon
Twinkling stars around the moon
I lay with him on browning grass
My heart is sad with morning coming fast
The dawn sends pale light all around
No need for the dying fire on the ground
Embers crackle and send a spark
Like the dying flame within my heart
I look at him, nearing the final time
And touch the lips that had once been mine
I brush his hair from eyes still closed
And touch my finger to his nose
On his neck, though they don’t show
My kisses linger there, I know
Red as blood, the sun is rising
But through my pain, I’m somehow smiling
His waking grin is just for me
So I kiss his lips behind this tree
For one last time, were no one sees
