Honorable Mention ~ Take My Phrase Contest ~ Inspired by Several Prompts
From Jasmine Dreams to Whirling Wishes

Happy Birthday, darling one
I hope this finds you well,
Not much has happened since last year
Once more, my dreams retell.

Thus began the letter once
And thirty-nine times more
The first one written joyously
The last to tend a chore.

Scent of jasmine lingers still
Imbued in crease and fold
Belying pain as every stroke
Rent open unhealed wounds.

Year by year this writer’s hand
Once firm, grew soft with age,
She sealed each missive with a tear
The last, but half a page.

Future overtakes the past,
Each year days swifter fly,
The jasmine no more promises
A loving mate for life.

Letters written to myself
My birthday wishes each
My hopes for life and finding one
To share my jasmine dreams.

Whirling wishes kindled not,
The garden gone to seed;'
I weep no more for embers, now
Warm fire best serves my needs.
