I combined a few of my Developmentally Disabled Clients' behaviors to make a point.
Jane Is Special

Jane is a special girl.
Of this, there is no doubt.
Born forty years ago,
When people weren't about,
Caring for their children,
Who came with special needs.
They were put in institutions:
Clothed, fed, and never seen.

Jane has mental retardation,
Dual diagnosed in Axis One.
Psychosis is prevalent.
Personality Disorders make her hum.

Rocking back and forth
Singing to a tune
Keeping the beat steady
It's all in her attitude!

Existing in a day program,
Living up to societal norms.
Wonder if she gets it?
What all her work is for?

Sorting beads by color
Dropping chips in a can
Placing popsicle sticks in a baggie
Stringing wooden beads by hand

Jane goes to "work" everyday.
Can't dress herself, but can explore,
Learning how to tie her shoes...
An everlasting chore.

She still has trouble walking.
An extra hand helps her so.
Years of crawling
Have weakened all her bones.

Field trips are a pleasure.
A simple ride in the van...
Brings plentiful sights and vibrations
Like nothing else can.

Simple as it may sound,
A van ride or a trip to the park,
Bring Jane's sense's to life!
With every step she walks!

Jane is a special woman.
Of this, there is no doubt.
Born into an unaccepting time,
But now she has come out!
