Second Best

Never competitive, sports day would offer me last place;
If I even turned up.
I cared little, competitions were rarely won;
If I even bothered to enter.

You, you changed all that
And I didn’t even know.

I didn’t know myself,
I didn’t know what I was doing,
And I didn’t know what I know now.

Not coming first – when you care, it hurts like hell.

To be your gorgeous,
To be your wonderful,
To be your joy,
Was not to be her.

It was to be your second best,
Not your only,
Not your soul mate,
Not your one true.

It was to lose the only race
I wanted to win.
