"Dust. That's what they call it anyway. The magic that fuels the New World. It's hard to fathom how these little grains that slip right on through your fingers can hold so much power, so much influence over other people and their lives. Dust is our town's blessin'. And it's unfortunate curse. In the early years, Eldertree was a backwater on the fringes of the civilized world. Just a tumbleweed town then; few’d even heard of it before. But that all sure changed when the prospectors arrived and discovered the Dust. A deep rift full of the glistenin’ ore ran right underneath Eldertree. That magical scar in the earth seemed to bring the entire world down upon our small frontier town—and with it, unimaginable wealth, the machines of industry, people from every corner and walk of life, cutthroat politics, and merciless bloodshed. Those of us that’ve made Eldertree our home find ourselves at a difficult crossroads. We're caught between the ways of the Old World we remember and this New World of magic, mayhem, and mystery. The world around us is truly shiftin’ like Dust blowin’ in the wind. And wouldn’t ya know it, it’s come to settle right at the feet of those that want to control our town and its magic. Like a dark silhouette on the horizon backlit by the high-noon sun, us regular folk can see what’s comin’ from miles away. Dust is powder in a keg. And it's only a matter of time before a spark makes Eldertree explode into chaos . . . " |

When you're reviewing a non-static item—and by that I mean something that isn't fiction/non-fiction/poetry—how do you go about it? What questions do you ask yourself when you can't focus on characters, plot, imagery, form, thesis, opinion, etc.? And, conversley, as a creator of a non-static item, what type of feedback is most helpful for you to receive? In particular, what feedback/suggestive edits do you give/find most helpful to receive for the following item types: Campfire Creative In & Out Madlib User Poll Word Search Crossword Puzzle Quiz Interactive Message Forum Survey Form Community Note |
For a message forum, it would be the concept (why does the forum exist?); the clarity of the rules / guidelines; and the look of it. |
For most of these community items, my reviews tend to focus on the item's general premise, the creativity and layout/format of the way it's presented, and possible suggestions for improvement. Those suggestions depend on what the item is. For polls and quizzes, I might comment on the wording/clarity of the questions, while my comments for an interactive or campfire might be about better setting the stage for the participants. I tend to want for myself the kinds of suggestions that I give out. I find it frustrating to get reviewed on the merits of other people's work (like whens someone thinks a message forum's conversations aren't ideal when it's not just me posting in there), but I'm always looking for ways to improve how clearly I'm communicating expectations and guidelines, and how clear I'm making it for the participants. |
With interactives and campfires, I look to see how well the various writers mesh with each other- do they compliment, or do they clash? I also check spelling and grammar. Likewise, does the owner maintain and check on the other fellas' work- I, myself, have had to do this at times. |

ROUND 4 Cards Against Writing is a weekly newsfeed contest based upon the party game Cards Against Humanity and is open to the entire Writing.Com community! So, if you see this on your newsfeed, you can play and win! Cards Against Writing is a card game where you finish fill-in-the-blank statements (black “Prompt” cards) by using words or phrases (white “Response” cards) that are often hilarious, nonsensical, crude, risqué, or politically incorrect. The goal is to create the funniest or most outrageous response to the Prompt card’s blank. To play, make a comment with five random numbers (1-200). These five random numbers will generate Response cards which will be emailed to you. These five Response cards will be your “hand” for this round. Select which Response card you like best to finish the weekly Prompt Card and comment your choice on this newsfeed post. The remaining cards in your “hand” are discarded for this round, so make sure your choice is one you can live with. Each round ends Saturday at midnight WDC time. A winner will be selected and a new Prompt card will be posted to the newsfeed. The process will start over again for the new round—don’t get too attached to the numbers for Response cards from the previous round because the deck is shuffled and the response cards are all given new numbers for the new round. ![]() ![]() |
