Born in the slums by a mother who did not want him, Jean-Baptiste Grenouille had an amazing gift- the ability to smell and distinguish individual smells. The only thing was that he had no smell, which made him to be perceived as evil. He grew up with no love and he did not seek to be loved.The first murder he committed was because he wanted to keep a smell that was so unique and beautiful.

It was his understanding of the power of scents and having no scent of his own that led him to murder. After murdering so many innocent young girls and creating that scent that he so craved, he realised that it gave him no joy.

The writer's ability to draw the reader into 18th century France and evoking the smells of that era.
