Summary of this Book...
This is the sequel to the story of Jean Rombaud. It's 20 years after the last book; Jean, Haakon and the Fugger have families now, with children almost as old as they were when this tale first began. Jean son, Gianni, betrays his family and reveals the location of Anne Bolyne's buried hand, and so Jean's quest is revived, only this time it is tearing his family apart.
This type of Book is good for...
Those who like a lot of action, who like a bit of history in their fiction and those who enjoy reading Canadian authors.
I especially liked...
I loved when the book took the characters to Canada! It's something your rarely see in fiction, since the market is so dominated by American writers. It was thrilling to read about how Canada's history fit into the history of France and England, and to read from the perspective of the indigenous people.
I didn't like...
I didn't like how the characters had changed so much over the 20 years since the previous novel. It was like I didn't know them anymore, especially Beck. I found their transformations sort of unbelievable, and it made it hard to care about the characters again.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
Tell the author he should have reconsidered the structure of his book. I felt the second half of the book which took Jean's daughter to Canada was a lot more interesting and worth reading. I don't know why Humphreys felt the need to include the old characters so much, I felt like it could have a lot less about Jean, Haakon and the Fugger, and more about Anne and Gianni. The book felt a bit too divided.
