Summary of this Book...
This book is the best antidote for writers block I have ever read. Like the title says, the book contains "some instructions on writing and life." In it, author Anne Lamott invites you into her quirky life and how the love of writing flavors every part of it. It is a combination of memior and writer's manual all rolled into one. In often self-deprecating ways Anne Lamott describes what its like to be a struggling writer, and suggests ways to dive right into your own writing, and how to murder the inner critic and explore new territory.
This type of Book is good for...
Laughing at one's self, while at the same time becoming a better writer. One can skip around in the book, dive in anyplace, coming away with valueable information.
I especially liked...
Anne Lamott's voice. Anyone who has dreamed of being a writer, will love Anne Lamotts dry, off-hand humor.
I didn't like...
References to drugs and alcohol, which make the book inappropriate for younger readers.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
Write!
This Book made me feel...
More knowledgable about myself and the art of writing.
The author of this Book...
Can say anything and make it interesting. I have read some of her fiction novels, and they are just as entertaining. She should write more!
I recommend this Book because...
I think you will love it as much as I do.
Further Comments...
This book contains chapters about plot, character, setting, finding your voice, and getting published. Here's a quote I loved that was in the book of E.L.Doctorow's, "Writing a novel is like driving a car at night. You can see only as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way."
