Summary of this Book...
the writings and philosophy of Joseph Campbell(1904-1987), an American author, who wrote many books about comparative mythology, culture and religion. He was an incredible man, born in New York city, who spent his whole life investigating art, myths and philosophy from various cultures and their common themes. In particular, he concerned himself with the journey of the Hero in all cultures, the conditions of its beginning, the stages and the results of the journey when the hero returns to society.
I especially liked...
the way this book was edited. To read the works of Josephy Campbell is an undertaking worthy of much time and serious study. In our fast-paced society, few of us will make the time to do this, unfortunately. The editor manages to capture through excerpts from Campbell's writings and lectures, the essence of his thought and observations in a way that makes it accessible to many people who can benefit from it in a practical way as they make their own hero's journey into the self.
I didn't like...
On the other hand, the problem with such an eclectic approach is that one sometimes loses the thread of the thought. Also, there is, of course, some repetition.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
find out more about Joseph Campbell and his thoughts and works. There is also a Joseph Campbell Foundation where I was able to find out more about this remarkable man.
This Book made me feel...
supported and inspired in my inward journey. Reassured that taking time to go inward and make this journey is a good thing to do, even though it may not make sense to a lot of people. It now makes emminent sense to me and I can see that it is a journey that many people have taken over the ages in many different cultures, each, of course, on their own individual path.
The author of this Book...
is a very self-effacing admirer of Joseph Campbell and the book was supported by the Joseph Campbell Foundation.
I recommend this Book because...
it gives you a much broader perspective of how you and your desire to find more meaning in life ties you in to a common thread throughout all civilization. This book helps support you against all the ridicule, and lack of understanding you will run into as you take your time to opt out of the world for awhile to regain your centre. It is also clear that you then must return to the world to make your contribution.
I don't recommend this Book because...
it would be far better, of course, to read one of Joseph Campbell's books!!!
