Shattered

"You have a skull like a rock!", Christina shouted as she tossed items haphazardly out of her drawers and into her suitcase. "I can't take it anymore, I just can't. I'm leaving." She stood and turned to face Josh, red faced and furious.

He stood there, hands in pockets, looking like a lost little boy. “I guess I’m sorry isn’t going to help?” he asked, hopefully.

“Hardly.” She spat out the word as she pushed past him.

“I really think I can make this up to you, Chrissy.” He pleaded, “Please, just give me one more chance. Please.”

“You just don’t listen, and you never have.” She wailed. “How could you ever think this was okay?” She was practically screaming, and could not seem to calm down. Shaking, she turned her back on him, to gather her composure. There was a half empty glass of water on the table near her hands, and she stared at it, inconsolable.

Half empty, she thought. That’s how I see things now, because of Josh. I was not that kind of person before.

Thinking of all that she lost, she turned, glass in hand, and flung the contents in his face. His eyes turned mean, and he strode over and grabbed her wrist, twisting it painfully and making her drop the cup. It fell against a jar of coins on the floor and shattered. Shattered, just like her heart. Fury welled within her anew.

Christina wrenched her arm away. “You don’t scare me anymore, Josh. I am done with you. I will not be half empty. I will not be shattered. Not anymore.” Without a backward glance, Christina walked out the door and knew that now she could start to put the pieces of herself back together again.
