GO FISH

BY PRESTON LIGHT

“Where’s the dubstep this music is shit!” An angry kid about twenty drunkenly yelled at the band performing on the worn and beat stage. The bar wasn’t what one would call nice. The paint on the walls were peeling and the floor just was generally disgusting. But the place served under age so it was the perfect hang out for college students. There was the usual crowd of young females on the dance floor and guys in the wall. But in one corner sat a kid by himself, he stood out in the crowd not because of his white hair and purple eyes. But because he seemed rather detached from everything that was happening he was just in the corner quietly sipping what appeared to be a tall glass of tequila. The kids name was Jace Wesson. “Well it’s good to see you back again.”  A man in a U.S army uniform said. Jace looked up at the man. “Ah general it’s you again. So what do I owe the pleasure this time? Last time we met you shoved a needle up my spine and injected me with some supposed super serum.” The general laughed. “Well Jace with your skill you really didn’t need it but you did make an ideal candidate. And if I do say so myself, you turned out to be a almost perfect specimen. I mean you’re no Cap. But maybe with another shot” “No I saw what happened to the other guy you pumped full of this stuff. I’m fine as is plus the healing factors annoying I can’t even get a damn tattoo.” The general sat back in his chair crossing his leg as he did “Fine then have it your way.” Jace looked up from his drink. “So what did you want because I know you have better things to do than chat with me?” The general shook his head at this. “You are always so impatient. But yes your right I found a clue that might get you the guy you’re after.”  Jace gave the general a questioning look. “What you didn’t think I would keep my end of the bargain? Well that’s not how we work.” The general said standing. “It’s good to see that some part of the government still isn’t corrupt. “Jace said as he stood up as well. “Remember you still work for me.” The general said grabbing his arm. “No you remember that you can’t control or stop me, and the only reason your breathing is because I allow it.” Jace said wrenching his arm free and heading to the bar.

Jace got to the bar and then remembered he had left the file on the table. When he turned around he found that there was a person at the table already. Jace approached the table. “Hey I left that folder there you mind handing it to me?” Jace asked the beautiful brunette that now resided at the table. “She smiled at him eyeing him up and down. “Who says that this belongs to you? The right thing to do is to turn it over to the barmaid.” She said picking up the file. A piece of paper slipped out and Jace leaned over to grab it before it fell to the ground. The girl had also leaned over to retrieve the paper. Jace got to it first catching it right before it hit the ground. As he looked up he noticed a Browning Louis XVI at her side which had been concealed by her coat. “My eyes aren’t down there.” The girl said jarring Jace back to reality. “Oh I’m sorry about that I have no clue what I could have been thinking.” Jace said quickly snatching the folder as it lay unguarded. “I’m sorry about the trouble have a good night.” Jace said as he quickly left the bar and headed to the streets. “Aren’t you forgetting these?” The girl’s voice rang out in the street. Jace turned to see her holding the papers from the folder. “I have to stop walking out without checking things” Jace mumbled to himself as he went back into the bar. “Here since they seem to be so important to you. I’ll never understand what a pretty girl has to do to get a drink?” “Try not being a bitch.” Jace said as he walked away “And how was I being a bitch to you?” She yelled after him. Jace stopped just to say “Oh you were perfectly nice but you just seem like the bitchy type to me.” Jace said and then disappeared into the crowd.

“So that had to be Michelle Bernadelli wonder if she’s in here.” Jace said flipping through the folder in his hand. There was no name in the folder except for Roscoe Browning. Jace stopped in a local Starbucks and ordered a coffee. He then sat and began to pour over the folder. He quickly found that Browning was a petty thief that had somehow got his hand on a magical jewel. The jewel gave him the ability to control things around. Not only that this thug had been an expert marksman he was a former spotter for snipers in the military. The file said he could be found in central downtown at most times. Jace looked outside and saw it had begun to rain. “Damn I hate this city.” Jace said looking out the rain. He also saw Michelle again. “She is persistent as hell wonder if someone has a contract out on me.” Jace muttered to himself as he rested his right hand on the hilt of one of his 9mm Beretta. “Well isn’t this pleasant I get to see you again. How’s that homework going?” She asked as she entered the shop. “Not bad I just finished.”  Jace said rising to leave. “Oh please don’t leave yet I think I’m going to need help with my homework too.” She said pulling out a handful of papers and sliding them in front of Jace. “Plus you only have on a hoody you would soaked through out there.” She said smiling at the shocked expression on Jaces face. “Women.” Jace said finally as he sat back down. “So tell me Michelle what do you want with me?” Jace said looking at her in the eyes for the first time. Michelle sat down and looked at Jace. “You are cute and your eyes are so interesting. I’ve never seen eyes that were purple.” Jace rolled his eyes. “Thanks it’s a birth defect and you didn’t answer my question.” Jace said as he ticked these things off on his fingers. “Well you sure know how to take a compliment. Anyways I don’t want to kill you so I’m going to help you.” Jace laughed at this statement. “You can’t kill me I hope you know that.” Jace said leaning in close to her. “Oh you’re cocky I like that.” Michelle said leaning in closer to Jace before she could respond Jace was kissing her. Then she felt the cold barrel of a gun at her throat as his knee kept her gun pinned to her side. “You’re too easy to catch off guard. Like I said you could never kill me.” Jace said as he picked up the files put them in order and left. “I did not see that coming at all.” Michelle said as she left also. “He is extremely sneaky.” She said as she realized he had taken her gun as well. "I can’t take him lightly at all.”

                                                                                                                                                      Later That Night

Jace looked down into the loading dock as the people milled around below him. He wore exactly what he had worn earlier the same jeans gray V neck and yellow polo hoodie. He slipped from the ceiling and landed quietly on a crate. He made his way down in silence. “I know ninjas that would kill to be this stealthy.” Jace whispered to himself. “You know you’re not exactly stealthy if you talk to yourself all the time.” Michelle said from behind Jace. Jace shook his head. “What does it take to get rid of you?” He whispered annoyed. “Well you took my gun and you’re not that bad of a kisser.” She whispered back. “Just so you know I’m starting to hate you.” Jace said continuing down the crates until he landed on solid ground. He looked up and saw his target at a black limo. “Guys got style.” Michelle said as she landed gracefully by Jace. Let’s see the product then. Browning said as he puffed on his cigar. The box he opened just happened to be above Jace and Michelle. What came out of the box was a prototype robot clearly made of adumantium. “Oh just great last thing I need right now.” Jace grumbled as the machine turned on. The first thing it did was scan the area and the first thing it saw was Michelle. It launched into attack as it screeched intruder. Jace quickly pushed Michelle out of the way and drew both guns. “What good is that going to do?” Michelle asked but Jace had disappeared already. The robot locked onto Michelle and started to aim. Just then Jace made an impossible leap as the machine fired Jace squeezed off two shots. They hit the mark and the machine went up in smoke. “Well what do we have here a hero in Seattle?” Browning said opening more robots. They all began to immediately fire on the pair. Michelle pulled out a small hand gun and started to shoot at the robots just to see the bullets deflected.  “Damn it were those just lucky shots?” She yelled as Jace shot robot after robot down. When all the robots were destroyed Jace turned back to her. “Nope I noticed they had a weakness their barrels could be jammed.” Michelle looked up at Jace in shock “How did you know that?” Jace shrugged at the question. “I’m just good I guess.” Jace said hopping down to the ground. Just to have a bullet zoom right pass him. It changed direction and came back for him. Jace reflexively shoot the bullet down. This happened four more times. Before Jace grew tired of this and charged Browning killing all 15 of Browning’s  guards.

Jace dropped his clipped and reloaded just in time to shoot down the last bullet and shoot the jewel from around Browning’s neck. The jewel shattered as it hit the ground. “Now here comes the important question you have to ask yourself. In all this chaos did I shoot six shots or five shots? Because you see what I have here is a Colt 357 Python one of the most powerful guns ever made. So now you gotta ask yourself do you feel lucky? Well do ya punk?” Jace laughed “You shot five you fat piece of shit. Not to mention who gives a damn about your one bullet when I still got fifteen?” Jace said emptying the clip on Browning. “You know guns don’t kill people lame cliché phrases do.” Jace said to Michelle as he helped her up.
