What happened to make a new five year old smile.
Out of nowhere I heard some one say” You forgot one.” I looked to the door to see who it was, and was thrilled to see the person standing there was my mom. I slide off my seat and ran to her. At this moment I had no care in the world.
It was my fifth birthday, and I was having it at McDonald’s. Every one of my friends was there: some of them were having their faces’ painted, some playing on the slides, and others were telling my nana what they wanted to eat. I was sitting alone in the corner because everyone was there except for my mom.
My mom was working as the manger of HH Greg, and was not going to be able to attend the party. My best friend, Katelyn was trying to get me to allow one of the workers to pant my face. Finally, after she begged and pleaded, like a dog begging for someone to scratch their stomach, I finally went and had my face painted.
After it was all said and done, I completely forgot that my mom was not there. Then I went to find her, so she could watch me go down the slide. When I remembered that she was not there I went and sat by myself in the corner again. After sitting there for what seemed like hours, the McDonald’s workers had brought out the food, and I sat slowly nibbling the edge of my fries.
All my friends had finished their happy meals, which in retrospect where not all that happy, and went to play again. I ate slowly, and was three- quarters the way done with my meal, but I couldn’t eat any more I was to upset. This time nothing any of my friends could have said or did would make me want to go play.
My nana and my best friend’s mom were trying to wrangle up all my friends because it was time to open my presents. My friends settle down and pay attention to Nana due to the excitement they held as I ripped through the shiny, metallic red paper to see what was hidden underneath. The first gift was from my Nana and Papa. The second one was from Katelyn, and after ten minutes all the presents were opened.
Then I heard someone say,” You forgot one.” Quick glances at the door widen my eyes with thrill and surprise. Falling from my seat, with absolutely no grace, I ran towards the calling sounds. I was thrilled to find that the mysterious voice belonged to my mom.
I kissed my mom and gave her a hug. This act seemed to have frozen time. It was then that I noticed she was holding a present in her hands. I grabbed it, and ripped through the paper. After this gift was thoroughly devoid of paper, everyone sang a public domain birthday song, you know the one that goes “happy birthday to you; happy birthday to you; happy birthday to insert name here; happy birthday to you”. Nana cut the cake the cake, and I was finally happy because my mom was there to celebrate my birthday. For the next hour I played with my friends on the slides, and showed my mother how I could slide down on my stomach, which a big feat for a five year old.
That night, before we went to bed, my mom and I played for two hours and then we had leftover birthday cake. The gift maybe gone but the memory that it brought will always be with me no matter where I go. That moment was special to me because my mom still showed up at my party even though she had to work that day, and that was the best gift that I could have ever gotten. The best gifts are the ones you can not buy in a store or wrap up with fancy paper, but the paper is a plus. The best gifts are the ones that come from the heart. Just my mom being there made my fifth birthday better than all of the ones I will ever have in my life.
