Alright, i read Impulse by Ellen Hopkins. Not the best book I've read. In fact it was very disturbing. the fact that it's

about 3 kids in a mental hospital strikes me as creepy already. I'd say that only someone with a twisted mind would want to read this. Or unless your bored. So, here's

what I didn't like about impulse, while everyone loves good detail, this book had enough detail to make me want to throw up. Here's an example: "i touched the silvery

blade to my finger, red blood immeiditly gushed from my finger." I find that enough to make me puke. Just thinking about that makes me queasy. And the fact how she describes how the drugs they're given at the hospital makes them feel is gut-wrenching. here's another good example : "The inside of my head feels like a blender, whirling a strange concoction of this morning's Prozac and this evening's lithium." That version of detail make me want to pass out. It just disturbs and sickens me.

And the fact that its about kids with problems like that is like a horror film. I know that this really happens, but The thought of writing something like that is gruesome. But i got to hand it to Ellen, she did a good job at putting enough detail into to make your blood curdle. So here's some of why I didn't like Impulse: First off, The first page starts out like a story, a story where where you're going where you don't want to go. here's an example: "Three separate highways intersect at a place where no reasonable person would ever want to go." If you think about that statement it won't be long until you think of that place in your mind...a creepy little world where no one wants to be. Pretty ominous if you ask me, or just plain creepy, After that you get to every one's story, about why they are at the mental hospital or in this case "Aspen Springs". here's another lovely example:"I don't remember much after that, except speed. Ghostly red lights, spinning faster and faster, as I began to recede from consciousness." Okay, Now here's the detail before that."The bullet hit bone, left my heart in one piece." That's why Conner, one of the main characters is here. he tried to kill himself. And one the biggest reason I didn't like about this book was the fact that there was no narration. The whole book was through the character's point of view, I mean that's great and all, because you know where the character is coming from, but I prefer narration because it helps me to better understand the context, especially when there are quotes for character lines. So, there you have it, my reveiw on Impulse, my reccomendation is do not read it if you are easily queasy or sickened. If you do like sickening reads like this then stop reading this essay and read the book already!!
