a bath in which the bather, after copious perspiration in a steam room, showers and has a rubdown.

Assignment 5.

Speaking of imagery and metaphor, I would like you to try an exercise on extended metaphor.
An extended metaphor, as you know, is kept and developed throughout the poem.

Your first line will be:

My memory is a steamy Turkish bath

Feel free to look for terms and atmospheres that are precise and related to the place. I think that accuracy is what makes your metaphor "shine" and speak to the senses. And this is the kind of place where all the senses can be used.

Enjoy your bath!

Letting Go

My memory is
a steamy Turkish bath

Love long ago lost
Grief’s vapor

Ancient Dragon’s Breath
Bubbling

Ghosts of the night
Screaming

Night sweats
summon towels

Standing naked
showered in love

Angels’ forgiveness
massages my soul
