thoughts behind the rags
The Bum

You frown.  You stare straight ahead.
You're passing by.
I should at least groan
so you could pick me out of the rubble
that is my home.
I sit here.  Sit on my sack.
All alone.
I watch the sun set.  Remember my dreams.
Imagine battles lost before they began,
not forgotten, so it seems.
A different path
was within my grasp.
I could have been a smartly dressed man today.
Like you, walking by, I, too,
could look the other way.
Yet here I set with the setting sun
We've alot in common.
I never would have guessed
there could be such hopelessness
in a world so filled with magic.
What happened to all of it?
I was a child filled with laughter.
Didn't know what was to come after.
Yet there's still light in this sun
as it sets so brilliantly.
Could that also be me when
my time draws to an end?
And as the dawn breaks anew
can I, too, begin again?
