Letter from the editor

Any Way, Anyway, Anyways? So many ways!
When should each different form of the word be used? Let's take a look...

First, before we begin, I should mention that "anyways" shouldn't ever be used. While it is often seen in writing, it is actually a corruption of the word "anyway", and should not be used. I know, I know... it is such a sad thing to hear that even words can be corrupted, but it is the unfortunate truth.

So, this leaves us with "any way" and "anyway" to take a look at.

"Any way" is an adjective (any), paired with a noun (way). It literally means... any way.

"Anyway" is an adverb, and should actually be used to describe a verb.

So, to put it all in context in a single short sentence:

I will try any way I can to avoid using the word "anyways", but I may accidentally slip up anyway.

There are many words in the US language that are just as confusing as the ones mentioned above, however. In some cases, maybe even more confusing, because you would use them more often anyway! (Ha! I just had to slip another one in there.)

Anyway...

Its (possessive) and it's (contraction).

It's rather silly that the porcupine is using its own quills to stick itself to a tree.

There (a place), their (possessive), and they're (contraction):
They're going to take their dog over there, to the park.

Loose (not tight) or Lose (to misplace)?
If you don't tie those loose shoelaces, you might just lose your shoes!

Let's face it - the English language is one of the hardest to learn, even for people born in this country. We all make mistakes, but you can use these sentences, if you wish, to quickly remind you of how each word should be used.

Ask & Answer

Feedback from my last newsletter, "Noticing Newbies Newsletter (January 29, 2014)

RICH ~ We even have a chat-room and Instant Message, where anything or anyplace can be found - pop in and ask.

Good point! I think it may depend on subscription, in some cases, but it is definitely another way to get involved! SJ

BIG BAD WOLF Happy July 4th! ~ Sometimes you meet interesting writers through interactives. I've befriended a few people that way, like one Twiga - she has some very good things.

You are absolutely right. Interactives can be a lot of fun, and you can find people with similar interests. Definitely!

Natechia dos Reis ~ I enjoyed reading your article. You are absolutely right when you say it's overwhelming being a newbie, but we're here to learn from each other so we need to take the first step sometimes. Perhaps make a goal of selecting a writer at random and reading his items or simply visiting his portfolio. This encouragement will also help you feel good. After a few weeks check in with those people and when you see how many merit badges and contests they have won you feel happy like a 'parent' for making that possible. Thank you again.

Remember that is not about how much you have. Those merit badges and ribons are great warm fuzzies, but that does not mean that there aren't amazing writers that are overlooked for them. Some writers are quiet. I'll admit, most of the writers I know are ones who are incredibly loud! I find them easily. *Smile*

Marie A. DiMauro , I have not forgotten about you! It has been a long month. *Smile*
