Welcome to the Noticing Newbies Newsletter! Our goal is to showcase some of our newest Writing.Com Authors and their items. From poetry and stories to creative polls and interactives, we'll bring you a wide variety of items to enjoy. We will also feature "how to" advice and items that will help to jump start the creation process on Writing.com

Honest Opinions
I can see why editors and agents send out form rejection letters; it's hard to suggest changes without sounding patronizing or without discouraging what might be a budding talent. And new writers, flush with the thrill of having finished their first book, do not want to hear the truth even if they say they do.
Is it better to leave an enthusiastic remark on an unremarkable piece, thereby undermining my own critical ability and giving a false impression of the work? Or is it better to tell a bit of the truth and risk making an enemy?
Each member has their own take on how best to review, and new members will have to decide how they will do it.
I spent too much time wrestling with this dilemma, and experimenting with both kind of reviews. Finally, I decided to stick with the truth, always. My enthusiastic remarks are always as honest as my negative suggestions; therefore, when I rate an item with a perfect 5, the writer knows I mean it. He will not go to the Public Review Page and see I gave everyone the same enthusiastic remarks and rate that I gave him. He will not doubt that the worth of the 5 stars was my honest opinion. Always being honest causes an author to have trust and confidence in my negative feedback, and consider it seriously.
Now, I will give you the benefit of my wisdom on how to writer better.
 Rewrite.
Rewrite.
Rewrite.
When you are finished, set the work aside for a month or two or three, then rewrite it again.
That's the only way to lift your writing out of the slush and sludge.
