Most people run for the hills when it comes to writing comedy. Injecting humor into a story is easier than what you think. It’s a matter of what can inspire you to find what’s funny to you and then practicing where to highlight it in your story.
How about from the funny TV shows you have watched? By taking a closer look at what you find funny, it can help to stop you from running to the hills when you hit a comedy brick wall. It doesn’t matter if your main focus of writing is Sci-fi, Drama, Detective, or, Mystery, you can always add some humor along the way.
Let’s delve into some of the comedy TV shows out there. It’s important to focus on the sub-genres. These are only a few in the humorous category. Be sure to search for your favorite!
Psych – Dramedy
Sub Genres – Mystery/Suspense/Thriller/Crime
-Shawn Spencer possess some uncanny powers of observation thanks to his father, who taught his son to remember even the smallest details of his surroundings. The hilarious part is he convinces the cops that he's a psychic. With the reluctant help of best friend Gus, Shawn starts solving cases for a skeptical but increasingly impressed police force.
Only Murders in the Building – Thriller Comedy
Sub Genres – Drama/Mystery/Thriller
With the two comedy greats of Steve Martin and Martin Short with Selena Gomez tossed in, it a recipe for a wacky show full of mystery, thrills, and laughs within an apartment building.
Monk – Dramedy
Sub Genres - Mystery
OCD is the issue with the main character Adrian Monk. Each episode finds him in tough situations because of it. How he handles his OCD is humorous and entertaining.
Upload – Sci-Fi Comedy
Sub-Genres – Drama/Thriller/Romance/Mystery
In the year 2033, people have the ability to upload themselves to a virtual world after their death. Seems like a good thing, but so many things can go wrong.
Castle – Drama
Sub-Genres – Comedy/Adventure/Thriller/Romance/Crime Fiction
Mystery novelist Rick Castle teams with a female NYPD Detective to solve cases as a way to help him get the facts right for his upcoming novels. He’s a witty character and weasels himself into every case with disastrous and comical results.
The Outlaws – Crime Thriller
Sub-Genres – Dark Comedy/Drama/Thriller
An edgy plot with a fantastic array of quirky characters. Even though it can be dark, the characters alone are hilarious. Especially, the character played by Christopher Walken.
From these examples of TV shows, you can clearly note there are more than one genre but each of them has a specific amount of humor to add entertainment value. While it’s true some of them can go overboard with the humor, the point is it doesn’t matter the genre you write in, there’s always room for comedy.
The best way is to try it yourself. Choose a show that makes you laugh and sit back and ask yourself, why is it funny? Is it the character? The circumstances? A funny quirk? Write it down, and who knows, it might make it into your next story.
If the genre of comedy has you running for the hills, run to the TV instead and laugh at a show for inspiration to write humor.
 Here's a clip of one of my favorite, funny characters, Adrian Monk. When I first joined, I wrote a story in 2008 based on him. The main character is a woman detective with an obscure phobia. It's one of my favorites, and I'm still editing it to this day. Find your favorite and add a twist of your own. Give it a try!

 Question for this newsletter: Which TV show, past or present, makes you laugh? Who’s your favorite funny character?
 Feedback from my last newsletter, "Summer Weather Vibes" . The question asked: How’s the summer weather in your neck of the woods? Has the heat, humidity, or storms ever ruined your summer plans?
s  : "Well, considering summer starts on December 1st, I think I've got a fair bit of time to make plans. We are in winter (started June 1 to end August 31) and it is cold but looking like not a lot of rain in my neck of the woods. That means summer will be dry and bushfires will be a very real danger. Sorry. Not much humour there. But they do tend to destroy an awful lot of the country..."
Wowzers.  I never considered that someone could be in winter already. I hope the weather gives you break!!

All we can do is bemoan our fickle weather and make the most of what we get. It never ceases to surprise us and it keeps us on our toes. We don't know whether to laugh, or cry. Extreme heat (106 degrees Fahrenheit), thunderstorms (with close lightning strikes), hail (this is more painful than it sounds when on a bike), even tornado warnings (complete with tornado sirens and flooded roads) have made vacations a challenge...but I wouldn't say they were ruined. Weather is just a fact of the biker life."
A 106!! Yikes! I have nothing to complain about at all. I wouldn't want to be on a motorcycle in any type of weather. I'm just going to stay in my igloo and be quiet from now on.  Thanks for the comment!!

Oh and there's a UV tanning lamp called the sun! If there's an afternoon thunder storm, forget it. Don't need to drown and get electrocuted!
Even baring that, I turn into a big grouch after an hour or two in the low 80s to mid 90s on the Fahrenheit scale when it's also almost constantly 100% humidity. Bleh.
See if it's a dry heat like in Arizona, New Mexico and Utah, I can be happy as a clam until it hits about 107 Farenheit.(although on my new meds not so sure.)
And thats coming from someone who likes most of the Disney cartoons. You know what? I wish I could go to Anaheim instead. Yeah Disneyland! Also I learned the hard way; don't eat dole whip when it's 90 plus. The syrup in those things dehydrates you worse than sweating. I almost gave myself heat stroke one time when I decided to wander around Disney Springs after consuming dole whip...maybe bring water to avoid that sort of thing."

I reside in Minnesota, so summer, winter, spring, or fall, it's either too hot or too cold, too humid, or too dry. Have storms ever ruined my plans? Damn straight they have, as has the extreme cold, excessive heat, and high humidity. But, being a Minnesotan, when one plan is ruined, there's always plan B.
