Road Trip
I hate to admit it, but I fell into the trap of being a stereotypical American as we took our first road trip of the year on Memorial Day Weekend. I did some prep for the trip the weekend before, but I didn't pack my own things until the night before. I was tired from working all week and not really feeling it, but I had no choice at that point. I packed a suitcase and hoped I remembered all the essentials. You know, clean underwear and the like. Some of the bathroom essentials I had to wait until the next morning to pack because they were still in use. That's were things got a little dicey.
We planned to take both of our small dogs with us. LuLu is a champion traveler. Cheddar is a car puker. I have tried every trick I had in my doggie arsenal without success for this problem. We took him to the veterinarian to get a prescription for a medication that is specifically for dogs who get car sick. It was pricey, but would be worth it if it worked. Unfortunately, we didn't have time to test if it would work before we left so we were prepared for the worst. I loaded the car with extra paper towels, sealable bags, and Nature's Miracle to handle any gastric forthcomings. I recently wrote this poem about this:
Let's go on a road trip!
We can drive the new car.
Pack up our two small dogs,
it's a long drive back home.
Grandma is the best hostess
She's excited to see the pups
This road trip should go smoothly
If Cheddar doesn't get car sick 
We had the car packed, the dogs in their travel seats, and were off at six in the morning from our home in Colorado. We drove all day, taking breaks for potty breaks, meals, etc., and spent the night in a hotel in Lincoln, Nebraska. It was there we discovered all the things I failed to pack. Shampoo. Shaving Cream and razon. Eye drops, Deodorant, plus a few more odds and ends.
The next day we were out the door just as early, with another long day of driving. When we arrived at my home town in Wisconsin, we hit the local Walmart before we went over to my Mom's place. We stocked up on the items we had forgotten.
In case you were curious, the medicine did work for Cheddar. He didn't get sick once during the whole trip. It was such a relief.
As we were crawling into bed that night, we were reflecting about how we had forgotten to pack so many things. Usually, we forget one thing when we pack for a trip. As we tried to settle into bed, we realized the other important thing we had forgotten: our pillows. We discovered that bringing ours from home improved our sleep dramatically because the place we stay provides these very flat, lifeless pillow.
Oh man, that was the worst thing to forget. I wouldn't be going out and buying temporary pillows because it isn't worth it, but these flat things were the worst. I was so exhausted, though, that I didn't notice it too much. Tonight, however, might be a bit different. I guess we'll put that one under "lessons learned": don't skip taking a day off from work to pack the day before you leave on vacation, and DON'T FORGET TO PACK THE PILLOWS. And extra ibuprofen. |
