Pride

It is a word that can have more than one meaning in a way because it can be seen as both positive and negative. Pride is listed as one of the seven deadly sins. Often, it is even listed first. Yet, there are many times and situations where having pride is considered a very good thing.

The Sinful Side

Some research showcased the sin that is sometimes referred to as vainglory. Now, I am not a theologian so there are some things I may get wrong for the religious side of the thoughts but based off what I read, it did seem to emphasize an excessive amount of self importance. The love of one's own excellence is done so in a way that it can come off extreme. I would imagine there is a problem with putting the human self above possible higher powers. At least, that is my brain interpretation. No matter the way the negative side of Pride goes, it's certainly something that could work for subject matter when it comes to writing a poem.

The question comes into play as to how you want to showcase that particular sin. Is this something where you show how pride could be a downfall. Perhaps this could even be done in a story telling or epic style of poetry. It even works in prose as I remember doing a rhyming piece in high school for speech team about goblins and at the end, the one trying to start the riot was pricked by the thorn and left alone. However, while we like to think people reap what they sow here on Earth, it is possible to write a poem expressing how that may not always be a case. The person's pride, might be too much but not something we see a negative result involving. Can be tricky in how you put this into poetic form.

How would you want to showcase when someone lets pride take over?

Show Your Pride

On the other hand, pride can also be a very important thing for self worth and group involvement. Many people are very proud of their country of birth, for example. We are getting closer to Memorial Day here in the US and in July it will be Independence Day. Pride in the country and being here is considered a very positive thing. The same goes for different ethnicities or heritage. People are proud that their familial origination came from Italy, Mexico or any other location. There are some places that even do events based on that type of pride. Then there is Pride for the LGBTQ+ community where there are performances and parades. The focus is on embracing differences and acceptance along with an acknowledgment to the very difficult times people have faced in the past.

Then there is self pride in accomplishments. We teach our goods that they can feel good when they succeed or accomplish something. This starts young with things like praise or stickers. Even with adults, there are times when praise is used to cause a reaction that is a good sense of pride. Self worth is also something that many of us consider to be of importance and is a good thing.

With these options, one can also use the more positive side of pride to create a poem. There are some good and happy things that could be said about or different ways to showcase pride in poetic form. Having a success, showing the emotions involved and the blossoming of character, those are some good options to consider. Finding the words to describe the concept can be tricky or it might even be easy. That all depends on a writer.

How would you showcase pride in a positive way?
