Who Is Your Contestant?
Part of any contest, or activity for that matter, is knowing who will participate. When setting up your contest, think about who you want to attract to participate. Who writes stories you want to read? Who brings excitement to your activity?
Let's say it is a flash fiction or short story contest. Hopefully, you like those types of stories, and have done some reading and reviewing of that type of story on the site. What do you enjoy reading? Generally, the person hosting the contest is the judge, or at least one of them. So why have a contest with a sci-fi prompt if it's not something you enjoy reading?
Do you enter writing contests? Are they similar to the one you're creating? What do you like to see for a prompt? What type of prompts do more contestants respond to? What contests have a lot of entries. In no way am I saying you should copy anyone's page, but it doesn't hurt to see what makes that page more successful than others. As always, it should have the basics: About the contest, Prompt/Parameters, Rules, Who is Judge, What are the prizes, and When is the start/deadline. Be concise. But I do suggest leave room for creativity in the writing. You don't want to end up reading twenty stories about teddy bears on viking ships.
Most of all, I suggest that you to be active. Post in your forum. Advertise. Ask groups you participate in to join in the fun. Be encouraging! We can all use some encouragement.

Write a short story using the prompt song "The Long Way Around" by The Chicks (f.k.a. The Dixie Chicks)" as inspiration!
Excerpt: Welcome to The Daily Poem! A contest where prompts are posted every 24 hours to inspire your poetry muse. Yes, I'm hosting this contest, but I am definitely not claiming to be an expert on poetry. Far from it, there's much better poetry writers on the site. Although, if they were running this contest, I wouldn't get to see their wonderful entries!
Excerpt: This is a place where veterans can come in, sit back, have a cup of coffee and read or write. A place to leave your thoughts, to share your dreams, to say what's on your mind. From one vet to another, welcome!
Also a place for the good folks to come in and leave a message for the veterans, and say "thanks"; share a story, poem/prose or whatever. Not to forget the men and women who are serving our country right now! They have caught the torch we have passed on, and will carry it high!
Prompt: "Play stupid games, win stupid prizes"
Prompt: "Ellen saw a blackbird singing to her even when she closed her eyes at night."
Excerpt: Do you LOVE a poem with a "sing-song" flow, or perhaps even a strict meter? Are some of your favorite songs those that include rhyme? Whether you are new to writing poetry or song lyrics or you've been writing them for years, this challenge is designed to expose you to new poetry forms and devices as well as new methods of songwriting that create a smooth and catchy tune.
Each event lasts only 5 days, with a new prompt each day. There is a daily prize as well as larger prizes for the winners of the event. However, because this is a challenge, there are quite a few rules in place and all are important. Please read through the below rules carefully and if you are interested in participating in the next event, post in the forum below!
Excerpt: Hands up if you loathe cliche! I thought so. Well, if you like to mock it, you've come to the right place! Every couple weeks or so, I'll post a cliche, overused or just plain amusing quote. With each one, I'll leave a spot blank. This is where you put in your own word or phrase to breathe some new life into these sayings.
Excerpt: Each member should have 1 to 3 goals, but no more than 3. The goals do NOT need to be writing or WDC related. As far as dates that goals must be achieved by, that is up to the individual members. Goals may be daily, weekly, biweekly, monthly or even up to a year to work on. We want this to be something to have fun while we reach our goals - not something that drags you down and makes you feel bad. This is a yearly activity that starts in January and ends on December 31st. If you must bow out, a simple request to be reinstated will be allowed when you are ready to resume.
Excerpt: This is a very simple challenge. You send me any new Short Story, Poetry, Novel Chapters, etc. And not only will I review it, but if I think that it’s good enough to give it a Rating of Five, I will give you five thousand GPs. I haven’t given out too many fives. But I have given out a few of them.
