*PenB* First Impressions:

That was a beautiful story. The soldiers were preparing for the D-Day landings, although most didn’t know what exactly they were preparing for, and nothing could really prepare them for what was going to happen anyway. Those with any sense were nervous, and tempers ran high, as evidenced by the way the CO reacted to the GI yelling in excitement at the beginning of this tale. But the CO only had their best interest at heart and hoped they would be okay. And of course, Omaha beach wasn’t a good place to be heading - but then, none of the destinations were ‘good’ for anyone.

I struggled with the language in places and had to look up a few words to get what they were talking about - ‘bangtail’ for example - but once I had figured it out, I found that part of the story quite intriguing, to see how they passed the time and how normal things were, in a way. I liked how you brought the story back to this at the end as well.

*PenG* Suggestions:

I didn’t notice any errors and I don’t have any suggestions, so I’m going to use this space to point out a paragraph I thought was particularly well done. The part near the end where the narrator is thinking about what might happen in fifty years time was exceptional. The line, And the cycle continues; same tune, different dance summed it up beautifully.

*PenP* Final Thoughts:

The ending, where his thoughts return to the 50:1 odds and he realises that their youth is about to be left behind forever, was very emotional. I liked how you handled the issue very sensitively and gave the readers an insight into their mindset at that time, and it was difficult to think that this story would have been true for a large number of young men at that time. I liked this story!

Come on in and join the fun!
