This short story begins with a lot of promise. Randall and Janet are going to visit Randall's mother's home. What will happen then? That creates suspense for the incoming happenings. There are high risks involved in the visit, too.
In our real lives, we often face many adverse situations. Even some of them are crucial. Those can also change our life's direction. That type of unknown circumstance appears in front of the two main characters of the story. The crisis demands to meet the mother of Randall. The purpose is fulfilled. A successful end of the story. But Randall's mother dies. It is also meaningful. Everything can not go in your favour. Sometimes, the loss is too heavy. Even though we have to accept that, this is the rule of law.
From the word number one, it is restlessly flowing toward the end. The suspense remains intact throughout the story. That is an important characteristic of a short story.
The number of characters is minimal. The two main characters are Randall and Janet. The Randall's mother's role is very significant. But, the role of Charley is vital, too. He plays the role of a catalyst. How can we forget that? Except for these four characters, there is no other character in the story. So it also fulfils the characteristic of an ideal story.
The pace of the story is smooth. It always follows the classic end.
Overall, we read a lovely short story. The readability is fantastic.
You create a lot of hope. Try to maintain this beginning.
Keep writing.
