'violin d'Ingres' is a French expression, meaning one's favourite pastime.



I always liked to write, I always wrote,
a searchlight on my waves, the moment thrown
in ink onto the page, an antidote
to flailing in an ocean not my own;
my days, a range of duties dwarf my time
responsibility, I will respond.
My hands are rough from work, but with my mind,
which types its thoughts, there is no solid bond.

It's only when I write that every sense
engages, self-contained, and sets me free
from need or pain. A violin string is tense
but stroke it like you know; it sings in key.

Welcome to my world, my violin d'Ingres,
I rest my bow, my little song is sung.
