1979 Freetown, Liberia, Initiation ceremony |

In 1979 while working for Maryland Logging Company in Maryland County, Liberia, I took a short trip to Freetown, a small village on the Cavalla River that separates Liberia from Ivory Coast. I was surprised to be invited to see part of the girls' initiation ceremony. Fortunately, I didn't have to see what came before. In the village there was one house with a 16' to 18' drum hung diagonally on its side. I later learned that in the past slavers would come into the area and kidnap residents. The drum may have been used to notify neighboring villagers of the slavers' presence in the area. The village of Freetown also had a few mini-corrals scattered about. About 4' x 4' x 3' high, the corrals were filled with all kinds of bones, possibly 'ju ju' to ward off evil, including slavers. |
