I infer from this quote that things you have to 'hang on to' are probably negative or are holding you back. "Being dragged" sounds like what happens when you can't move on from something that you should let go of so that you are no longer concerned or obsessed with it.
It reminds me of another quote that's full of truth about difficult situations, although sometimes the truth is hard to face.
