Kind of the requisite to be a lich. Too many things to study, too little time to do them. Thus, they resolve to extend their life through undeath in order to achieve this knowledge. After some time, just like long-lived races, they learn patience by force.

The man's got all the time in the world (pretty much). Eventually, it'll land where it wants, and it'll do the operation. But, as with every phylactery, if the book is destroyed...

Now - it's entirely possible Gerssdorff became a demilich, which would have its conscience pretty much dormant until it absorbs lifeforce, and eventually protect itself and/or continue its work. It's entirely possible. A bit of a shame that an alchemist chose to essentially adopt undeath to reach its Magnum Opus?
