The idea comes from a Bradbury (I think) super short story I read 55 or more years ago. Part of his Martian Chronicles series I think. It takes place on mars and is a window through time and they talk about the living vibrant city the Martian sees and the tens of thousands of years old ruins the earth man sees.

I've had this idea for years. A "What if it was a spatial hole and their minds filled in any inconsistencies with common to themselves images." I'd love to expand it, but I don't want another John Carter.
