Some stories are best told as if you're talking to a friend. It relaxes the reader, and they feel more a part of it. Plus you'll feel relaxed and do your best.
I think that you may not actually "hate" what you write, but you are unsure of it. If others think it's good, then maybe it is.
One sure way is to post a short piece here at WDC. Make it for Registered Users and Review Only if you're not ready for the world to see it. Let the good folks in WDC give you some feedback and encouragement. That's one of the great things about WDC.
BTW, everyone goes through the stage of unsure or hating what they do. It will pass, once you jump in.
