I would much rather get the personal rejection letter because I want to know why it didn't work. I want to know what I could do to improve my writing. Form letters are the most frustrating things.

I went to college at UC Santa Cruz one of the few colleges that (at that time) did not give grades in the majority of classes. Rather they used a Pass/Fail narrative evaluation system. I think that system is great because we put so much emphisis on grades when being told you got a 'B' in no way can help you improve. Through the evals the professor or TA could say your strengths and weaknesses which would help you in the next quarters classes. Through that and the detailed evaluations I got on papers I could see the drastic improvement of my paper writing from my freshman year to my senior year.
