Reading is a great place to start, but when you read, don't read as a reader, but as a writer. Look at how the books are constructed. What do you like about them? How did the author accomplish that? What don't you like? Why not? How could it have been done better.

Also write. Writing is one of those crafts that improves with practice. Don't just talk about writing, but sit down and put pen to paper or fingers to keyboard.
