"God in the Machine" is not about the protagonist being doomed from the get go; I have no problem with protagonists succumbing to their obstacles. What deus ex machina does is save the doomed protagonist by proclaiming that "...and then a miracle occurred."
Never is a word like any other. Just like certain swear words, it should be used with prudence so it does not lose its power or effectiveness, but that does not mean that it should always be avoided. I've yet to hear anything in this thread that would make me recant my usage of it or change my stance on deus ex machina endings.
