I rarely use any literary device consciously. I don't plan to integrate flashbacks when I sit down to write; if flashbacks are called for, fine, I'll write them. If they're necessary, they seem to work themselves into the writing just fine; if they're not, they are awkward.

I guess if they're not planned, it's hard to say how frequently I use them. I can't even think of an example, but I'm sure I've used them - in fact, I'm pretty sure I used some in my novel, to explain why a character was feeling guilty (dad was missing, and she flashed back to their last conversation - in which she'd been pretty snotty).
