As a habit lurker, I almost don't feel like I should be answering this!

However, since I have attempted to write erotica in the past, I'll give my reasoning. I love to experiment with my writing, and that includes bending genre rules. I usually don't opt to write a story based solely on sexual actions, but I like to use sexual actions as the climax (hardy har har) of a story. (Sorry. I had to get that pun in.) Seriously, though, I only use sex as a turning point in a longer work. In a scene that is sadly lost, I wrote possibly the only decent sex scene I'll ever write, and I wrote it to show how far a psychologically damaged girl would go to be with a man that was helping her rebuild her life. She lured him into this situation as a means of expressing a confused love for him, and ultimately this sex act was to serve as a means of fusing them together, for better or worse.

(Man, what is it with me and puns?)

Anyway, in another work (and you'll actually get to see this), I use sex as a turning point to develop another character (literally!). It also allows for the main character to explore a repressed rebellious side of her personality and to show her naive trust in people.

Am I abnormal for using erotica in plot development?
