I remember my kids using homemade drum sets and, for myself, more cake than you could eat - no, seriously. I like how you take us from the simple joys of childhood to the life of an adult, remembering how things were and hoping for some new adventure.

There's a melancholy about this piece while reading, and I'm sure many of us can relate to that feeling you've captured quite well when it comes to birthday celebrations.

Nice! How many of us have been caught in that little trap? My wife, for one. It wasn't by just a day, but it still sidelined her for a year.

What a wonderful description of a family get-together. Picking up conversations where they left off from the year gone by, reaffirming memories of songs sung long ago, enriched now by the addition of new voices, both young and old. That would be an ideal birthday party indeed.

That's so mad! They should totally step on the weighing scale before and after all that cake binge! Imagine you have the 31 peeps in the family and every single day that month is their birthday...

The horror!

"Kiddo, you are getting yesterday's left over cake as your birthday cake today. No whining allowed!"
