Labour Day
September 5th prompt: Motivational Monday! Today is Labor Day in the U.S., and here are eight quotes regarding labor and work....pick one and tell us what it means to you.
There were fine quotes to choose from, but I selected one from Martin Luther King Jr. ``All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance, and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence.`` I understand this to mean that any job, any occupation no matter what it is has a purpose. Everyone contributes in their own way with their own skills, their own viewpoint, and their own reasoning. No labor is trivial, or meaningless.
Many jobs or occupations are co-dependent. An architect designs a building. Carpenters, roofers, electricians, plumbers, and dry-wallers interpret that plan, and create the finished building. Engineers design vehicles. Assembly-line workers put the various components together, while mechanics maintain and, or repair the vehicles. Doctors diagnose illnesses and prescribe treatments, but they often depend upon nurses, lab technicians, and therapists.
All laborers should strive to do their best. Every little bit of effort benefits more than just the worker.
Labour Day here in Canada is celebrated as a long weekend. It`s the last hurrah of summer, and it signals a return to school.
Martin Luther King Jr. could have been referencing motherhood in his quote. It`s a full time, never-ending, all-consuming career with no actual salary, no review boards, no union, no paid vacations, no substitute employees, no manual, no budget, and no formal training. It`s a by-the-seat-of-your-pants occupation influenced by intuition and instincts. A mother must be adaptable, flexible, patient, clairovoyant,, intuitive, physically fit, stable-sane-crazy, wise, and more. Her boss is her offspring: finicky, demanding, petulant, temperamental, screaming, loving, cuddling, questioning, trusting, dependent. Any juggling mother ``uplifts humanity`` with dignity and importance.
