Internet Access is a Want, Not a Need
PROMPT:How much would not having Internet access for an extended period impact your life?
Well, I'm not going to lie; if I wanted Internet access, but it was denied to me for whatever reason, I would definitely miss it. How could I log onto WDC and write/post my blog? Where else could I both store and share my musings, creative offerings, my everything? Sometimes, the immediate or near immediate feedback massages the ego. I also have merit badges to earn and points to accumulate.
I'll admit I seem to have a daily routine in which I read online news reports. After perusing the mundane, the bizarre, and the tragic, I check in to my Facebook account. Here, I see who is doing what, who is sharing, who has posted yet another selfie, who is naively circulating the latest rumour/scandal, and who has found the best humour. Yes, it's a method of keeping in touch; a virtual scrapbook.Sometimes, I indulge in a post or two.
I rely upon my email account to deliver bills, receipts, newsletters, ads, and personal messages. With this, I'm able to correspond with my father who lives kilometres away on the far side of Canada. This is so much quicker than snail mail. Occasionally, I dispatch something in the post, but email justifies our having computers.
So, yes, I do enjoy my Internet access. It is very convenient. It entertains me. It keeps me in touch.I do endure periods of non-use and I do so cold turkey with surprisingly no withdrawal symptoms.
I've traveled to Internet absent venues, and I've done so willingly. For as much as two weeks, I found other pastimes to amuse me. I scribbled in my journal with the aid of my own two hands, a pen, and chicken scratch. I sketched with a wonderfully forgiving tool known as a pencil. I've always loved reading and without the distraction of the internet, I indulge this passion. The entire purpose of travelling is to see, hear, feel, and taste new things. There's nothing better than meeting new people; everyone has fascinating stories. Camping provides a wonderful opportunity to forego the internet. Swimming and campfires are so much better when they are real.
So, I suppose Internet access is not a need, but a want, a luxury. I know that without it I will still survive and thrive.
