Summer has arrived in Las Vegas

Summer is here at last. The temperature broke the triple digits yesterday and perhaps the day before. There was an extreme heat warning on Saturday and the cooling stations opened for the homeless. Las Vegas isn't a good place for a person to be homeless in the summer.

The city's long cloudless days with triple digit temperatures makes it difficult for everyone living here. The homeless and those on fixed incomes have the most difficulties. The homeless get the worst of it because they have no homes and no air conditioning. Those on fixed incomes are next because in summer it often comes to a choice between food and paying the power bill.

I'm not worried about food because we have plenty of rice, beans and pasta, which can be eaten cold once they are cooked. I'm not worried about cooking them because I can always cook them at night. It isn't like I actually sleep anyway. It's been so long since I had a good night's sleep that I wouldn't know how to react if I did get a decent night's sleep.

My sleep pattern is the same all year. I doze, wake up, and then doze again. I hear an odd noise and get up to check the house. While I'm up I peek out the windows to see what is going on outside. Usually nothing is going on or nothing I can see in the dark.

Summer is here with its long hot days and its short warm nights. The thermostat is set on 79 degrees. I am thinking about turning it up to 80 degrees, but I will wait until Monday and call NV Energy to see what temperature they recommend.
