Iowa landscape

         for Mandy

Nothing to see
and nothing to do,
she lifts herself up
as the dawn pinks the sky, not as early
as she used to.
One egg,
one slice of toast,
the chickens to feed
once the cat's been given milk.
She sips in the morning.
The tea kettle's whistling
and across the frozen yard
there is nothing to see:
just two doves searching the gravel,
a cardinal flashing red at the feeder,
three crow passing by.
And there's nothing to do:
the crossword's done
and the afghan squares need just a stitch or two.
Kyle will come by today
to pick up the pies she baked yesterday; and,
Lyle will stop in to bring her the gossip
and the new crossword puzzle.
Like always,
he'll have plenty to say.
She listens to the sound of the day.
There is nothing to hear.
Save skye greeting ground with a whisper:
everything's okay.

Iowegian Skye sent me an email with the above photo of an Iowa farmyard she drives past everyday. Notice the cornfield: stubble and snow. I know folks here in town adore 'their' mountains and most folks here at WDC will say they prefer mountains too, but I really miss the open grasslands. The photo took me back to a quiet time and place I really miss ... knifed right through me.

blah blah blah:

Saw Ryne, saw Haniah, didn't do much.

*Reading* Almost done with A River Runs Though It by Maclean.

Ate part of my pasty (made in Anaconda); the lutefisk still sits in the fridge. *Smirk*

The sun is out ...

BLOGVILLE

(Edited after Serenity's comment) I really pushed myself blogging in January. I'll need to attend to other things this month (so I'll miss an occasional day). I'm doing stats. One interesting thing: I had 1,167 views in January, of which over 900 came from WDC by 93 individuals, of whom 47 left 245 comments. One visited almost every day leaving comments in 28 entries. *Shock* I'll be sending her a merit badge for that!

PROMPTS FOR THE DAY:

The name Gavin is most common in North Dakota, Alabama and Utah; Diane in Arizona. Mosiah? Montana! So ... write a story about Mosiah Montana. Place it in Dillon (where hailey lives or Big Timber, Bozeman or Billings! *Laugh*
