Frozen in Time

Frozen in Time

Somewhere in the forest a mighty pine bleeds,
the golden viscous sap running as a turgid river,
slowly, deliberately, near unmoving.

An insect lands, sinks into the stream, trapped
as the flow hardens in transparent clarity,
and time turns sap and tree and forest into sea.

The waters smooth and shape the pine’s blood
and, washed up on the shore, a gnat in amber.
