Hope Springs Eternal

Fresh arrivals from Africa, hungry for the sea,
we bought a clapped out car in Wimbledon,
picked the closest point on the coast (Littlehampton),
drove on winding English roads, at last the sea,
flat grey line on the horizon, then the town
and a green field, a bank. We rushed to find
a shingle beach, a cold sea waveless in the winter wind.
