Driftwood

We found it in the dunes,
beached by some storm of long ago,
stripped of its bark by the waters,
bones sanded and polished,
smooth and bleached to perfection,
every knot and rift and snag
drawn with precision in the grain.
We kept it on display, beauty even in death.
