Arrival

Arrival

We came upon the place at nightfall
when the lights were coming on in the windows
and the sounds of the day were dying,
swallowed up in the vast silence of the dark.

The streets were empty as we walked them,
the shadows deep but not threatening,
the murmur of voices behind barred doors
and a baby’s cry from the faint glow in a stable.
