| Chief Inspector Ross stared at the board in front of him. He was trying to make connections between the culprits that have provided a lot of confusing evidence. "You don't think Declan is being framed?" Ross looked over at his Inspector. "I mean, he seems to be in over his head, but I can't help feeling... something's off." Ross nodded. He felt the same way. One murky path through the milieu of evidence lead to Drew Declan, but there was something not quite fitting into place. "He doesn't have an alibi for the murder. He does have a flimsy motive, at best, but I'm not convinced he's capable of murder." "Nor am I." "Should we still bring him in, sir?" Ross shook his head. He wanted something more substantial. There was something there he was missing. "Another cookie, sir." one of the new recruits asked, shoving another plate piled high onto the table. "Cookies." Ross said then turned back to the board to study it. "Sir?" "Did you notice the trail of crumbs at the murder scene?" "Yeah, we figured the victim - " "Never assume, Inspector. It is those small things that can make or break a case." "You think the cookie monster did it, sir" the inspector said, fighting a grin. "No Inspector, but who do we know who loves cookies and is not partial to sharing?" The Chief Inspector waited a beat. "Alsa Adams, sir." "Yes, and didn't she say she'd been baking for the community bake sale." The Inspector nodded, then asked, "you think she'd kill if Mr. Roberts stole a few cookies from her?" "I don't think it was the first time and I got a sense it annoyed her." "Well, damn. I could see her blaming Declan -" "Bring her in for questioning." Words = 296. Notes ▼      |
