Here's what I'm doing toward getting published. |
"I have to write! The alternative, chopping off my fingers, would be too painful." - T Edward Harper "A professional writer is an amateur who didn't quit." - Richard Bach "Do the thing and you'll have the power." - Ralph Waldo Emerson "A moment's success pays for the failure of the years." - Robert Browning |
I didn't receive any reply at all from Jay Furst at the Post Bulletin. I'm not sure what to do as it is possible that he didn't receive my email, but I don't want to antagonize him if he did and simply wasn't interested. I'm going to think on this a couple more days and then either try to contact Mr. Furst over the phone or just go to the next magazine on my list. Wish me luck. “Opportunity…often it comes in the form of misfortune, or temporary defeat.” Napoleon Hill |
Located about twenty five miles north of Rochester, Minnesota, in the idyllic town of Zumbrota, sits a wonderful cultural center called Crossings at Carnegie. I have taken writing classes there, read my poems and stories in their open mic night, and attended the shows and concerts they put on. The place impressed me so much that I wrote a story about it and am trying to publish it locally. First I sent it to Rochester Magazine: Mr. Lange, My name is Thomas Harper. I called your office approximately two weeks ago to inform you about a story I've written concerning Crossings in Zumbrota. I received your telephone response and was thrilled to hear that you accept freelance submissions. So I'm happy to present my story and excited to see if you like it, my style, or both. I also have other published articles I would love to show you upon request. I wrote the story about Crossings because I have derived so much pleasure from its diverse offerings and I think it may be too big of a secret for most of the greater Rochester area. Thank you for your time. Thomas Harper Rochester, MN http://improg.writing.com I received the following reply: thomas- thanks much for the story. unfortunately, we don't really have a place for it in the magazine right now. it was a well-written piece, it is just not the type of coverage we would normally give, especially to a site outside of the city. the topic is probably more suitable to our parent company--the post-bulletin--and i would encourage you to pitch it to them as well. but, feel free to send us any other story pitches (or clips for our files). thanks again. steve I took Mr. Lange's advice and have sent my story off to the Post Bulletin: Mr. Furst, My name is Thomas Harper. I have written a story about an amazing cultural center in Zumbrota called Crossings at Carnegie. I showed the story to Steve Lange over at Rochester Magazine and he felt that the Post Bulletin would be a better fit. I would appreciate you taking a look at what I've written as I think you will find it a nice addition to your newspaper. I wrote this story because I have derived so much pleasure from Crossings's diverse offerings and I think it may be too big of a secret for much of the greater Rochester area. Thank you for your time. Thomas Harper Rochester, MN http://improg.writing.com I can't wait to see the response.
