How to Read the Tarot

Begin by brewing a cup of tea,
a nervine, lemon balm or chamomile,
this is after all, your future.
A reading at the dark of the moon is best,
before the night creatures crawl
and bad humours fill the air.
Pick a circular deck, with a fairy-tale motif,
and no reversals.
Hold a question in your heart,
shuffle the cards and place them on the table.
Choose only two.
Like the ancient Israelites,
these are your seer stones, Urim and Thumimm,
black and white, yes or no.
Isn't that all you were asking?

the golden mean

Prayer 2025

When I am too weary,
or too ill, or too muddled to pray
I go to the lake's edge and sit.
Not truly a lake, a man made retention pond
born twenty years ago.
But grandmother oak and grandmother cypress
hold and remember my pleas.
With brother egret and sister heron
I stretch and release,
I ruffle and settle.
My word for this year: intercommunication.
Is that not prayer enough?

12 lines
prompt: a picture of a lake

The Herb Crafter's Tarot--6 of Air--Cattail--open yourself to new ways to pray.

Garden

This year I will plant
beans and greens,
tiny luscious lettuces,
sturdy purple pole beans.
The ancestors and hungry ghosts
visit my garden.
I am grateful
for their guardian presence.
Because of light pollution
I cannot always see the Milky Way's path.
But, I can always find the North Star.
The edge of my garden
has sunflowers and roses.
a perfect match
to bring heaven and honey
to earth.

16 lines
prompt: use the words bean, can, match, grateful

La Santa Muerte

I have seen her twice.
Once, reflected in a mirror
hung opposite a dying patient's bed.
The first time, as a girl of ten
walking alone on a neighborhood street at dusk.
I did not know her then.
She is not a mythical creature
but a citizen of non-ordinary reality.
I have learned that she belies our belief
that we are in control of anything,
that, in the future, we will figure it all out.
Our ashes are a reckoning.
But then, there are constellations.

13 lines
Prompt: Write about a mythical creature

Zenith

The Zenith tea room is my spot
for a book club of strong women,
a restaurant and antique store.

Old madonnas and sacred hearts
line the shelves, kitsch is a given.
The vegan cuisine we adore.

A monthly meeting set aside
for poetry and politics.
We aim to kill all doom and gloom.

Not for us prejudice and pride,
we have outgrown close-minded cliques,
at the funky Zenith tea room.

Naples Solstice 2024

We don't have snow
in Naples, Florida
except the machine made stuff.
We have lots of sunshine
and glistening white sand.
I string lights
and dust off the electric candles.
At the beach
a full cold misty moon
and a fresh star to follow..
Seaweed washes onto shore.
I gather some to take home and dry.
I will sprinkle seaweed
and a dash of Gulf water
into my Yule bread.
Life is good here
from now to Epiphany.

17 lines
prompt: snow, sunshine, glistening

Serendipity--

Two volumes arrived yesterday
Book of our Divine Mother MariaTheos.
Thick and spiral-bound
they were offered gratis.

MariaTheos
I fall into mystery
answer my prayer

Nikki Giovanni died yesterday. Feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
She wrote that no one ever says what they mean.
How can we know our heart's true desire?
I am skeptical of channeling, but heard a strong feminine voice.

I asked for guidance
She answered with one word, "Stay"
and thus, I abide.

Form: Haibun, 14 lines
Prompt: Serendipity

Thankful

I am no longer a woman
of the 24-hour news cycle
but becoming
a being of the long sacred story.
In our shattered world,
in a body deranged
by genocidal technostates
there are shifts and waves
safe caves.
It is there in your bones and skin,
a place where your ancestors live.
Come,
be a wide-eyed wanderer.

prompt: Thankfulness

Do Whales Pray?

It was just a typo that read,
"I have a rosary from Whales",
I thanked her for spellcheck
and tumbled down that rabbit hole.
Whales wouldn't pray like us
but with their songs
clicking and whirring.
Spiders dream, dolphins have accents.
We are one teetering, entangled,
endless thread
dangling
by prayer.

Form--free verse

Armistice Day

Today, ostensibly, we celebrate peace.
But in a stunning word
Recrudescense
we are back
to a Trumpian dystopia.
No nuance here
just the icy wind
of autocracy.
He is not colorful
but bathed in blood and hate.
Amerikka's first dictator,
America's last president.

12 lines
prompt: use the words stunning, nuance, colorful, last, first in a poem
