Entomology Ants are useful creatures, just not at my picnic. Bedbugs must serve some purpose, but what? Dung beetles navigate by the Milky Way, looking for love. Earwigs don't really burrow in your ears. Fireflies are always welcome in my yard. Gnats are Gnot so welcome. Horseflies have bloodsucking females. Imago is the term for all adult insects. Jerusalem cricket is hump-backed and slow moving. Katydid, but perhaps she didn't. Locusts are quite biblical. Mosquitos are the bane of Florida. Nectar scarabs eat pollen and nectar from flowers. Prayer 2025 When I am too weary, or too ill, or too muddled to pray I go to the lake's edge and sit. Not truly a lake, a man made retention pond born twenty years ago. But grandmother oak and grandmother cypress hold and remember my pleas. With brother egret and sister heron I stretch and release, I ruffle and settle. My word for this year: intercommunication. Garden This year I will plant beans and greens, tiny luscious lettuces, sturdy purple pole beans. The ancestors and hungry ghosts visit my garden. I am grateful for their guardian presence. Because of light pollution I cannot always see the Milky Way's path. But, I can always find the North Star. La Santa Muerte I have seen her twice. Once, reflected in a mirror hung opposite a dying patient's bed. The first time, as a girl of ten walking alone on a neighborhood street at dusk. I did not know her then. She is not a mythical creature but a citizen of non-ordinary reality. I have learned that she belies our belief that we are in control of anything, that, in the future, we will figure it all out. Our ashes are a reckoning. Zenith The Zenith tea room is my spot for a book club of strong women, a restaurant and antique store. Old madonnas and sacred hearts line the shelves, kitsch is a given. The vegan cuisine we adore. A monthly meeting set aside for poetry and politics. We aim to kill all doom and gloom. Not for us prejudice and pride, we have outgrown close-minded cliques, at the funky Zenith tea room. Naples Solstice 2024 We don't have snow in Naples, Florida except the machine made stuff. We have lots of sunshine and glistening white sand. I string lights and dust off the electric candles. At the beach a full cold misty moon and a fresh star to follow.. Seaweed washes onto shore. I gather some to take home and dry. I will sprinkle seaweed and a dash of Gulf water into my Yule bread.
