Short story for Flash Fiction contest
Hiking for a while, he had stopped to figure out where he was. Suddenly he lost his train of thought.

Why were there no sounds? The birds and animals had all gone silent. It was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.

Jack was skeptical. He didn’t believe all this nonsense about bigfoot! He was an outdoor person, hunting, fishing, and hiking all his life, and never seeing anything even remotely unusual out in these woods. He had only come out here to prove to his best friend, Rick, that this was all B.S.!

There had supposedly been a slew of sightings in the area recently, of a giant hairy creature in this general area – five in the last week. Rick honestly believed it was all true, but the simplest explanation was that that people had misidentified some of the usual forest animals – most likely bears. Or maybe, it was all just a hoax and someone wanted their “five minutes of fame”. Whatever, it certainly wasn’t a bigfoot!

But what about this strange silence and the sudden feeling of being watched! Obviously, he was just being paranoid and creeping himself out.

A loud rustling noise behind him caused Jack to spin around. There, standing on the path not twenty-five feet from him was an ape-like creature, about eight feet tall, staring directly at him. Panicking, Jack bolted, taking off at a dead run. He tripped and fell to the ground – he felt sure that the creature would be on him any second! Quickly glancing back, Jack was shocked to see that the creature had disappeared. Had he even been there? He didn’t know for sure, but he wasn’t going to stick around to find out!

One thing was certain – he wouldn’t be telling anyone, especially Rick!
