Sisters survive a frightening encounter. Flash fiction using road, water, sign. 297 words. |
Amy and her older sister Jenna were walking home from the bowling alley just after eight o’clock. It was only about two miles and the narrow back road was completely deserted as usual. It was nearly dark when suddenly lights appeared in front of them and a car pulled up. A young man leaned out and said, “Excuse me, ladies. Could you help us out?” Jenna walked up to the car with her phone in her hand, ready to call 911 if she needed to. The man suddenly grabbed at her hand but she was able to yank it back, dropping her phone in the process. “Run!” Jenna screamed and they both ran into the woods beside the road. They ran deeper and deeper into the woods with Jenna in the lead. Amy tried to keep up, but it was much darker in the woods and at some point, she crashed into a tree. She woke to the sound of water running gently over the rocks in a small creek. She was cold and had a headache, but was not otherwise hurt. As her head cleared, she remembered that she and Jenna… Wait, where was Jenna? She called out, “Jenna, where are you?” but there was no answer. Now wide awake, Amy stood and looked around for Jenna, at the same time reaching for her phone. There was no sign of Jenna and no phone. She must have dropped it somewhere. The frightening memories of last night came back in a rush. She was just wondering how she would ever find her way back home when she heard a familiar voice. “Mom, Dad! Here she is!” Jenna pulled Amy into a hug and sobbed, “Oh, Amy. I’m so sorry!” “It’s OK, Jenna. I knew you’d find me.” (297 words) |
