Catfight in the corn maze.

Walking in a straight line, I followed along the well-worn path, moving closer to the intersection where I would need to make a decision—which arrow to follow. The uncertainty of my choice hung in the air, adding to the suspense of the moment. I couldn't say why I decided to participate in this activity.

Obviously, I was a follower, going along with my peers into the corn maze. The pressure of their excitement and the dread of the spooky maze weighed heavily on me. I hated spooky things, and this maze screamed spooky. Why I let my best friend talk me into this insanity, I couldn't say.

A cool gust of wind sent a shiver down my spine as I chose the arrow to the left, silently praying it was the quickest direction toward the exit and freedom. Left, right, left again, then right; I hurried along, trying to tamp my out-of-control breathing and rapid heartbeat, when a hand pulled me into a cornstalk.

"What the hell," I yelped.

"Shh," my best friend Sally whispered. "Chris and Tiffany are making out around the corner. We need to go another way."

"Where's Andi?" I asked as we made our way together in the opposite direction.

Sally shrugged. "If she's lucky, she's already out of this thing. If she sees those two together, Tiff will lose an eyeball."

A few turns later, we escaped through the maze's exit.

Looking around, I saw no sign of Andi. "Well, she's not here."

"We told her he's a player and not to get mixed up with him," Sally said.

I nodded just as the shouting began from inside the maze. I couldn't help but laugh, realizing how my fears of the labyrinth paled to the sound of two girls fighting over a guy.
