A Letter from the Heart

Dear Canada,

Scientifically, the heart is the central organ which pumps blood through a complicated network of tubes by contraction providing the body with oxygen and nutrients. Finally, the blood is returned to the heart. (1) (2) Avicenna, one of the most significant physicians of the Islamic Golden Age, once wrote in his book Canon of Medicine: "[The heart is the] root of all faculties and gives the faculties the nutrition, life, apprehension, and movement to several other members." (4) Many philosophers also believed that the heart is the source of intelligence, motion, and sensation. (3)

Heart diseases are the 2^nd leading cause of death in Canada, claiming more than 33,600 lives per year and costs the Canadian economy more than $20.9 billion every year. The most common type of heart disease is Coronary Artery Disease (CAD). (6) CAD can be caused by high levels of certain fats and cholesterol in the blood which build up where arteries are damaged. (7) However, Canadians educated to take great care of our hearts and be highly aware of the seriousness of heart diseases. Thus, we are seldom to ignore the damaging impact of heart diseases.

Alberta supplies nutrients all over Canada for more than half of a century; helping the rest of Canada move forward yet never asking for anything in return. (5) (8) We keep our head low and put our lives on the line to make sure the lifelines of Canada operate 24-7-365. So why are our voices obnubilated and why have you become ignorant to the vital importance of the oil and gas industry? Or are you simply too proud of your cause to be aware to the grave danger of losing the oil and gas industry?

Alberta has provided you with unlimited nutrients for the past half of a century and raised you to become the country you are today. We helped to keep our land glorious and free and we ask for nothing more than having our voices heard. We are tired of screaming through a pillow. So please, open your eyes and ears because if you do not, it will be the number one cause of death of Canada, claiming more than 30 million lives and will cost the Canadian economy.
